5 Simple Weight Loss Tips

Posted 29 April, 2009 in Weight loss, Weight Loss | No comments

Weight loss advice is everywhere. You’ll hear all sorts of
advice if you go onto the internet and read blogs and health
articles. Everyone seems to think that they have the most
important weight loss secret ever. The fact is that the
principles of losing weight are not a secret! They are
simple things you can do to really make a change to your
lifestyle.

Below you’ll find some of the main ‘weight loss secrets’ you
should know and master. This is not an all-inclusive list,
but if you can master these things you’ll be off to a great
start.

1- Motivation

This is one of the weight loss secrets that a lot of people
don’t pay enough attention to. You have to find a way to
keep yourself motivated. One way to help with this is to
take a before photo, and then find images that represent a
realistic goal for you to reach for.

2- Get Frequent Exercise

Any exercise is better than nothing. Do some body weight
exercises or lift weights. Get out for a walk, jog, or other
type of cardio workout. For you to really lose weight and
keep it off you’re going to need to build more muscle. This
doesn’t happen on it’s own, you have to get out and get some
exercise!

3- Watch Your Carb Intake

A lot of people put on extra weight because they simply eat
too much. And of all the macro nutrients you eat the one
that is probably the most abused is carbs! If you want to
lose weight, you need to control your carbs. Cut out the
unhealthy snacks and eat less carb dense snacks.

4- Eat More Frequently

I’m sure you’ve all heard this before, but don’t go for the
old idea of 3 or 4 square meals a day and that’s it. You
should be eating 6-8 smaller meals a day to keep your
metabolism going all day long.

5- Cheat From Time to Time

Cheat meals are a great way to give yourself something to
look forward to during the week. Here’s an example of how
this works: if your next cheat meal is planned for Friday,
you can be stronger when you’re tempted to eat something out
of the plan on Wednesday. Just write it down as an option
for your cheat meal. When you do have a cheat meal, don’t
let it turn into a cheat week!

Lost a Wagon?

Posted 29 April, 2009 in Weight loss, Weight Loss | No comments

I’m slacking off and it’s showing.

Exams were tough this semester, and I definitely fell off the wagon in favor of maximum study time, which included lots of eating out, quick and unhealthy foods, and zero workout time. I haven’t even done yoga in about a week! I’m really missing it, but more than that, I can feel it.

I went home for the weekend, and it was the biggest encouragement to me. Almost everyone that I talked to [especially at church] commented on how good I looked, including both of my pastors. It felt really nice to hear that it wasn’t just me and Joey noticing, but others could see it too.

I tried on a few pairs of shorts that I haven’t worn since high school, and they all fit! I’ve officially dropped two sizes, and actually have clothes for the summer, which was something I was worried about. I don’t really have the money to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe [which is really what I need]. My mother did take me on Saturday to buy some new shirts, which I was super grateful for, since I had no short-sleeved shirts at all, and it’s definitely not okay to wear long sleeves all summer long.

Even though I’m super happy with how far I’ve come in the past four months, I can’t just throw it all away now. A new gym opened up in town late last fall, with classes included with a membership, as opposed to the gym on campus where you have to pay for any classes you take [and not cheap either -- $60 for ten classes]. They have a student rate at the new gym of about $40 a month through the summer, which I will definitely be taking advantage of. I plan on buying my membership TODAY, I can’t wait any longer to get my butt moving!

I move on Friday from my current house to the one I will be living in until I graduate [weird!], which will be quite the workout on its own. Luckily I will be able to use Joey’s car to take stuff back and forth, but it’s still going to be a job to get everything into the car, back out, and up the stairs to my room on the second floor. I’m very much looking forward to it!

On top of all that, I’ve found a job for the summer! Nothing too exciting, just working at a small amusement park type place on the outskirts of town for minimum wage. But I can have as many hours as I would like, and I’m still looking for a second job to supplement that one. As long as I have a job for now though, I’m happy! It means that I can stay here for the summer!

All of this to say that I will finally get into some sort of routine, meaning that it will be easier to stick with eating well and exercising. I need to jump back on the wagon full-force. I know that going to the gym and seriously working out will help immensely. I toned up very nicely just going for two months of the summer two years ago before getting busy and not making the time. But this year I’m obviously much more committed to losing weight and seeing serious results. I know that I can do it, I’m stuck on it, and all that’s left now is to actually see it through.

She’s joining weight watchers again?

One of the issues I deal with as millions of others do is a weight related one. My neighbour just told me that she’s joined Weight Watchers for the upteenth time… and is confident this time will be different… the woman is close to 70 if not over, how can she still be trying to figure this out? Her daughter has lost the weight and is putting it back which is the path I’ve just followed… but I keep searching for what will work for me… this time from within! I am reading an interesting book called The ZEN of eating! It resonates so far. I always knew that this is not purely a weight loss issue but a hunger for a bigger life! It begins with letting go.. does anyone know how to do that?

Set the par this Mother’s day by ensuring your children’s dietary future is secure

Set the par this Mother’s day by ensuring your children’s dietary future is secure

As mothers we all seek to offer our children the best possible future. We aspire to give them everything they could ever need in order to set them in the right direction when they grow up. But what if we were to tell you that you can begin offering your children a healthier route to a happier body from the moment you conceive them? Would you be interested in learning more?
Well, according to the Medical Research Council the way we eat during pregnancy can have a detrimental influence upon our children’s eating habits in the future.
Under their thesis, they believe external environmental elements such as our diet can affect how our genes are passed onto our children. Depending on the type of external element, for example a carbohydrate based diet, could in turn cause particular genes to end up being capped.
And once capped, it is harder to activate within the body when needed - weight loss being a prime example of this scenario being put into action.
In a study performed by the Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Research Centre they found that when a particular mechanism within our muscles is capped it can have dramatic affect upon our ability to lose weight.
Now whilst this theory is still under testing and is yet to be clinically proven in terms of knowing how much this could possibly influence a child’s eating habits, it does put what we eat as a parent into a whole new perspective.
Everything we do, every action we make in some shape and form is passed onto our children. From conception to beyond our diet choices could be having a subconscious impact upon our children.
So what do you do? Begin making the changes - today.
Scientists may believe that this is all down to genetics, but you CAN still have a positive influence over your children’s eating habits – beginning with what you do this Mother’s Day.
You can make this momentous day into one that is truly worth celebrating by ensuring that you set a clear precedent for your children. From exercising regularly to cutting down on their saturated fat content, you can begin making the right changes that will continue to guide them as adults and parents themselves.
So whether you already have children or are planning to have some more in the future, make this Mother’s day one to remember – as the day you took that first step to setting them on the right path.

Mother’s Day Article

Mother’s Day Article

As a mother it is important that you take care of your body, and your health is no exclusion to this rule. From the way you eat, to taking the time to give yourself a break from it all; each of these factors can have a detrimental impact upon your body.
This being said, finding the time to actually eat properly is easier said than done. With your mind 100% focused on looking after your child, finding the time to eat right can be hard. Instead it is much easier to eat on the go and to put your body on hold until later.
Yet if the Wellcome Trust is correct, making the time to focus on your health may be more important than you think.
In their current study which looks into the inheritance of genes in children, they believe the way you eat during pregnancy could have a direct effect upon the way your children develop when they are born.
From the way they look, to the characteristics they develop, the Wellcome Trust have developed the theory that even the foods you eat during pregnancy could have an influence over their eating habits as an adult. Including their ability to experience effective long lasting weight loss.
Taking statistics offered by the Heart Institute’s Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Research Centre, they found that due to DNA methylation particular mechanisms that control weight loss in muscles can be capped making it harder for the said individual to lose weight.
And this capping is rooted in the belief that external environmental elements can impact upon the way genes are expressed in children.
So if this thesis is to be taken seriously it would mean from the moment you conceive you need to take care of your diet in order to ensure your children have the best possible start in leading a healthier lifestyle.
Now when this information is compared to the recent revelation that nine in ten children will be obese by 2050; the time to take action and put a stop to this statistic is now – beginning with yourself.
By offering your body a healthy and nutritious diet combined with regular exercise, you can directly pass on this lifestyle change to your children.
And when better to put this plan into action than on Mother’s day this March 22nd?
Taking charge of your health doesn’t have to be a solo act. You can get your whole family involved and can set the precedent for your children to follow for many years to come.
Plus to top it all, by changing your dietary habits today, your body will be able to cope with everything your children have got to throw at you: from action packed weekends playing on the park, to going for a bike ride… with a healthier, happier body you’ll always be able to keep up.
So make this Mother’s day one to remember… as the day you took charge of your body, toned up and achieved the body you always wanted.

Set your children on the path to a healthier and happier lifestyle this Mother’s day

Posted 29 April, 2009 in Weight loss, Weight Loss | No comments

Set your children on the path to a healthier and happier lifestyle this Mother’s day

Taking care of your health and body is always important, and this Mother’s Day should be no different. For one day of the year you are given free reign to be spoilt, get pampered and most importantly celebrate with your family being a mother. An occasion we all love and look forward to.
Yet your role as a mother is not simply defined by this one day alone. Your commitment and love for them is year long. From showing them right from wrong, to teaching them about the world, every action you perform is for them and for them alone.
But did you know that even the way you eat can influence your children’s health decisions in the future? It’s true. From as early as pregnancy, the foods you eat can have a strong influence on the way your children’s diet develops in the future, as the Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust discovered in their recent study.
Drawing further on this thesis, the Wellcome Trust believe that even the smallest changes in our external environment and eating habits can be passed on directly through our DNA to our children. A theory that places a whole new light on recent data that suggests by 2050 nine in ten children will be obese.
It all ties down to the actions we perform today.
But don’t worry if you mis-behaved during your pregnancy and ate fatty foods. We all did. What matters most is the fact that you can still have a positive influence upon your children’s eating habits, beginning with the choices you make this Mother’s day.
Let us explain.
No matter your children’s age, there are things you can do today that can set precedent for them as they grow up and have families of their own. You can make the change, and the fascinating part is, is that all it takes is small subtle changes to help them in the right direction.
Turn your Mother’s day around
Imagine for a moment a fun-filled day filled with action, activity and enjoyment for the entire family. Bike rides, long walks, picnicking in the park… you can turn this Mother’s day into one to remember as you fill your families day with delicious low in saturated food and fun, fun, fun.
And the best part is they won’t even realise that you have removed the traditional meal out/ takeaway with a healthier option.
Instead they will be having too much fun making your Mother’s day one to remember.
And the benefits can affect you all. You, your partner, your children… all of you can begin feeling the benefits of natural weight loss and a healthier body.
So make this Mother’s day one to remember. Carefree, fun and most important, the day you know that you are setting your children in the right direction.

Subliminal Messages

Posted 29 April, 2009 in Weight loss, Weight Loss | No comments

1-self-esteem

Sometimes there are little signs.  Subliminal messages everywhere you turn.  Does that ever happen to you?  Well lately it has been happening to me a lot.  For example yesterday I was at our local super store.  I love to go down the book isle and see what is new.  I don’t know why I do it I never buy a book unless someone else has told me how wonderful it is. Even then the odds are slim.  I Guess I just like to look smart in the book isle :)   As I am looking at all of the books on display I started noticing a theme.
·         23  Minutes In Hell
·         Love Your Life
·         Never Give Up
·         Might As Well Laugh At It Now
While I was standing there it occurred to me that these books were trying to tell me something.  They were either trying to tell me that way to many people are messed up, myself excluded.  Or that I am going to hell so I better love my life and never give up so I can laugh about it later.  I still have not quite figured out which one it is because I prefer to live in a state of denial and pretend like my life is perfect!
Okay so let’s pretend like my life is not perfect…now this is waaay out there!  How do I decipher this subliminal gift that was sent my way?  Let’s start with the first book, 23 Minutes In Hell.  If I choose one aspect of my life to compare to hell…well it would be my body image and weight.  Although there have been 20+ YEARS in hell not only minutes.  When I look at pictures taken through out my life I immediately notice how fat I looked at the time.  Rarely do I think positive things about the pictures when I see them.  There are a couple that stand out in my mind. My Junior Prom, my thoughts are… I had to get one of the largest dresses in the store and my date stood me up, so my sweet cousin stepped in to save the day…Thanks Jake.  That is a true story!   By the way the idiot who stood me up is serving a prison sentence because he is a major loser…ahhh sweet revenge. :)
The second picture is either my 17th or 18th birthday and I have a freakin’ weight watchers cake with a candle in it.  I hate that picture!  Not only was I fat but I have a picture of a fat girl with a mini cake that only 1 candle could fit on!  That is why I do not know if it is my 17th or 18th birthday.   There are way to  many pictures to remind me that my self image problem has been going on far to long.
Book 2 Love Your Life.  It has taken my up until I was about 33 to really love my life.  So yes I will admit I have bought a book or two that are considered “Self Help”.  Amazingly with the right frame of mind they can be quite effective.  I have been able to let go of a lot of the little things that really don’t matter.  When you do that you create positive energy and it just keeps growing.  It really is awesome!  Go ahead try one I won’t tell anybody you need help.
Book 3 Never Give Up.  Now this can mean many things.  It could mean that I should never give up trying to find my fabulous body underneath all of this fat.  It could mean as long as I keep working towards developing a better self image, that no matter what the scale and society say, it will be okay.  It could also mean that even though Hershey’s is everywhere I go they will eventually get the hint and quit trying to seduce me with their hugs and kisses.
Book 4 Might as Well Laugh at it Now.  Well this is my favorite.  I think that way because if I didn’t laugh about it all then what?  I have said a few times that today I am stronger than yesterday.  The strength is coming from being able not to sweat the small stuff.  Yes I have a long way to go but each day I am getting closer to a better me.  What more can I say to that?!

Weight loss surgeries vs. diet pills – which are safer?

Weight loss surgeries vs. diet pills – which are safer?

When it comes to successful weight loss you want to follow a route that is stress free and painless, which is why being able to find a weight loss supplement that can offer you long term weight loss results is so important.
Especially when the other common alternative is surgery.
Look on the web and you will commonly find 4 types of weight loss surgery. Each of them risky and painful.
Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) – here the stomach is stapled into 2 parts, with the upper part being made smaller to reduce space for food.
Once the food arrives it is passed into the lower pouch through a small opening. To prevent the hole from expanding, a band is put in place to stop it stretching.
RISKS: the band is prone to wearing; the staple line can breakdown and in some cases stomach juices have leaked into the abdomen causing infection and even death.
Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (Lap-Band) – intended only for people who are 100lbs overweight, this device works by placing an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach.
The band itself can be altered in size by changing the amount of salt there is in the saline solution in the band, but overall this band is intended to be permanent.
RISKS: can lead to nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain, band slippage and pouch enlargement.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) – during this surgery, the surgeon makes the stomach smaller by stapling it and creating a smaller pouch. This pouch is then attached to the middle past of the small intestine.
The reason they do this is to one, limit how much you eat and two, to reduce the number of nutrients that are absorbed into the small intestine.
RISKS: offers the risk of ‘dumping syndrome’ where food moves too rapidly through the small intestine. Other side effects include – nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, diarrhoea, infection, leaking, pulmonary embolism, gall stones and nutritional deficiency.
Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) – this is a highly risky surgery that is rarely used. Here surgeons remove a large part of the stomach, limiting food and stomach acid production. This small pouch is then connected to the final segment of the small intestine. A common channel is kept to allow bile and pancreatic digestive juices to mix with the food before it enters the intestine.
RISKS: nutritional deficiencies.
As you can see each of these surgeries comes with risks. Risks that are impossible to ignore when there are other natural alternatives available.
Now as we say this there are of course weight loss supplements on the market which can cause similarly unpleasant side effects to these surgeries. To name just a few: Alli, Reductil and Xenical - each of these can cause unpleasant, negative side effects.
Then there is the fact that they can only be used for a limited amount of time. Varying from 3 months to a year, for those seeking long term weight loss results, such dietary pills as these just cannot help.
Yet there is hope.
Natural fat binders such as Proactol™ can offer you an easier route to weight loss without any of the risks of bogus pills or surgery.
100% organic and side effect, Proactol™ is clinically proven to help consumers reduce their dietary fat intake by 28% whilst also suppressing their appetite. The perfect combination for taking control of your weight loss, without ever having to worry about your body. It is risk free.
And compared to most weight loss pills you’ll find online, Proactol™ comes highly recommended as natural weight loss supplement within the media.
To date it has been featured in the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the New York Times and most recently in bridal magazine YouAndYourWedding where they teamed up with Proactol™ to offer users a free trip to a Champney spa.
So offer your body a natural solution to weight loss, free from all risks.

Vince’s Extreme Makeover

Posted 29 April, 2009 in Weight loss, Weight Loss | No comments

Tonight I’m thinking back to last year, 2008 was a huge year in my life… divorce, job loss, starting over and a total transformation of myself - physically, emotionally and spiritually. I had gone through an extreme makeover… and I like to say that the new Vince is… well see for your self! Below are just 3 photos of me that I have downloaded online.

My heaviest weight was 264 pounds… I now weigh 170 pounds, and I have not yet reached my goal weight (well, I’ve reached my goal weight a few times, it keeps changing to something less each week). A year ago I had an annual physical exam… my cholesterol was over 330, my blood pressure over 150/110, my body was tired and I was advised by my doctor to make a lifestyle change or I may miss my daughter’s wedding day! I’ve lost over 90 pounds in the last 6 months.

So why post this blog about my weight loss? Well, a few reasons… firstly, my self image has improved and I am happy with who I am and what I look like! Secondly, I want to let go of the old Vince and get ready to launch the new Vince; and finally, I want to let you know that you can do it too! I had my annual physical exam a few weeks ago and my cholesterol is now 85, my blood pressure is 120/80 and I am running a marathon in June. Yes… I am actually training for a triathlon too!

My doctor, my family and my friends have asked me how I did it. My secret… a healthy diet (no takeout, no eating out, no junk food and no Pepsi), exercise everyday (I workout everyday at the gym and stay active - my kids help me with that!) and determination (I know what I want and go get it!). No fancy meal plans, no quick fix surgery, no travelling to Tibet to meditate… just my trust and faith in God!

Today’s scripture is - “Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” - Hebrews 10:35-36

So my friends, stay tuned for more about the new adventures of Vince. Good night and stay strong!
